Merriman: Transforming land and building for the future

Job brief: To build a new company head office

When Managing Director Michael Merriman decided it was time the company relocate and build a brand new purpose-built head office there was only one company up to the job - his own.
In this unique project, Merriman Ltd found itself both the client and the contractor. The result is a landmark building, enhancing the local landscape, and becoming a statement for Merriman's build capabilities.

Situated within the Charnwood Edge Business Park, the building covers 500sqm over two storeys. Working with Nottingham design and consulting engineer partners Franklin Ellis Architects and Curtins Consultancy respectively, the brief was to create a building that was functional yet modern and dynamic.

Reflecting Merriman's history within the quarry and ground working field, standard brick and block was discounted for more robust and dramatic external materials with granite becoming the key feature. Inset windows, a circular pod door entrance and a modern flat overhang roof, designed to let in the light but keep out the dazzle, complete the building.

Internally, Merriman's own joinery department created a bespoke reception desk and a unique plastering technique adds to the modern interior design. Outside, a statement water feature encapsulates the brief for this entire project - to create a wow factor, reflecting Merriman's ability to build functional and dynamic commercial property.
