Merriman Ltd was awarded the role of Principal Contractor on this ground-breaking project at the former Annesley Colliery, near Newstead, Nottinghamshire.

Site owner, Newstead Enterprise – a consortium of three local charities – won lottery funding through the Village SOS initiative and enlisted Merriman to help it turn the disused colliery tip into a country park.

The works included the construction of an eco visitor centre, now called Newstead Earth Centre. This sustainable building was constructed from old tyres, which, when filled with earth, have thermal properties that act as a heat store.

For this part of the project, Merriman achieved a Certificate of Compliance from Considerate Constructors. This recognises firms that take into account the environment surrounding the build, the overall safety of the project, and the local community.

Merriman also enhanced the old colliery lagoons by re-profiling them, and converting them into angling lakes.

Volunteers from Newstead assisted Merriman throughout the project, and many of Merriman’s suppliers and subcontractors followed its lead in providing their services at a special rate, or donating materials to ensure this exciting community project was a success.
