Merriman was enlisted by Persimmon Homes to remediate a colliery yard in north Nottinghamshire, levelling the site and making it suitable for development.
The site itself formed part of a conservation area.
Merriman took responsibility for discharging planning conditions, which included demolishing buildings selectively and using its remediation expertise to address asbestos and contamination issues.
Furthermore, Merriman organised the dismantling and careful restoration of the colliery wheels, which it then relocated to the forefront of the site to create an eye-catching reminder of the site's important history.
A full validation report was provided to the client, with Merriman seeking relevant approvals along the way from The Environment Agency, and obtaining certification from the NHBC.
The project won an Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) award, see below ICE President Jean Venables presenting Mike Bailey of Merriman Limited and John Ottoway of WYG with the award.
