Brief: To remediate 30 acres of a former brickwork site
Merriman won the contract to remediate land on a former industrial site between Sheffield and Barnsley in South Yorkshire. As part of the works Merriman Remediation was tasked with mitigating the costs to the Client by removing shallow coal reserves at the former Deepcar Brickworks and then bringing the land back into use.
The works also involved grouting of mine-workings and adits; addressing contamination issues; controlled compaction of re-engineered ground and having it geotechnically and environmentally validated to a standard approved by the NHBC ready for new home building.
The work is part of a joint venture with Bloor Homes to remediate around 30 acres of the former brickworks. The remediation will eventually produce about 27 acres of residential land and three acres for commercial use.
The project so far has included:
- Coal and other mineral recovery
- Excavation of relict underground structures associated with the sites industrial past
- Negotiation with YEDL regarding 33kV overhead power line diversion
- Negotiations regarding the relocation of Stocksbridge sewage treatment plant
- Re-engineering, testing and validation of Phase I fill material
- Placement of surcharge to the Phase I area
- Design of site Minewater Treatment Scheme
